A small waterbird (20 cm) found throughout Eurasia and Africa. A common resident in SA except for the dry central Kalahari. Usually found in small groups of up to 6 birds when breeding and in groups of up to 600 when not breeding. Lives off small aquatic animals (frogs, tadpoles).
