A medium to small (28 cm) water bird distributed throughout Eurasia, Africa and North America. An uncommon bird in SA breeding sporadically when conditions are right. Occurs in pairs when breeding and in large groups (250 to 1300) when not breeding. Lives off small aquatic animals.
