A smallish to medium bird (about 40 cm) living in the southern oceans as far north as the Tropic of Capricorn. It breeds on many Antarctic islands and on Antarctica. It is a common non breeding visitor to all SA waters in the winter. A gregarious bird it follows ships and lives off krill, fish, carrion and offal.
