A medium bird (80 cm) with a slender build, found throughout Africa south of the Sahara, the Middle East, India, Sri Lanka, se Asia to Australia. A common resident in SA except for the Kalahari sandveld. It swims well with only the neck showing. The main food is fish but also frogs and arthropods.
