A large waterbird (about 97 cm) found throughout Southern Africa, the rest of Africa south of the Sahara and Madagascar. It is a common resident and is solitary as it waits for prey at the edges of inland waters.  Often seen stalking through open grasslands.  It lives off frogs, insects, fish, crabs and small birds. The nest is a large platform of sticks lined with plant material.
