A smallish bird (43 cm) found in Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe, and Western Asia. In Southern Africa there are two populations, an uncommon sub species resident in the north east, and an uncommon migrant sub species from the Palearctic. It is found mainly in inland waters and is a shy skulking bird. It lives off insects and other small creatures.
