| A small bird (about 36 cm) distributed throughout Africa, Madagascar, Eurasia, Australia and New Zealand. It is found throughout southern Africa except for the Namib and the Kalahari. Two subspecies are found in South Africa, a common non-breeding Palearctic migrant and an uncommon breeding resident, the distribution of both birds overlapping considerably.
