A medium sized bird (about 64 cm) found in much of Africa south of the equator and in Eurasia. In Southern Africa it is an uncommon to rare resident found in the Okavango and the eastern and southern areas. A secretive bird, it is found in reed-beds and marshes. It normally lives off fish, frogs and crustaceans
