A large bird (about 90cm), a very common resident in South Africa (excluding dry parts), and in Africa south of the Sahara; Madagascar and Middle East. It inhabits inland waters, sewage works. It scavenges and eats small mammals, nestlings, eggs, small reptiles. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees, bushes or on the ground built in large colonies.
