A medium sized bird (about 70cm), common locally in South Africa, but distributed world wide. It inhabits shallow inland waters and neighbouring wet grasslands. It feeds off insects, worms, molluscs, fish and frogs. The nest is a compact platform of twigs or reeds in a colony in trees or bushes
