A medium sized bird (about 46 cm) found in Africa south of the Sahara, Madagascar, India to Burma, and central America. In Southern Africa it is a common resident in the subtropical areas but rare in the drier west. It lives in the larger inland waters and pans, eating seeds and fruits of aquatic plants
