A medium sized bird (about 40cm), an uncommon resident and somewhat nomadic. It is found in most of Africa south of the Sahara and Madagascar. It inhabits quiet inland, deep waters in small groups. It lives off water lily seeds and other water plants, and feeds young on insects. The nest is a pile of plant material about 25cm deep
