A largish bird (about 61 cm to 64 cm) endemic to Southern Africa, living in the highveld and the semi arid areas. It is a common bird found near inland waters. It is highly gregarious with moulting flocks numbering in the thousands. The main food is crop seeds and algae in the winter and also insects and crustaceans in the summer
