A medium sized duck, an uncommon localized resident, distributed over Southern Africa and north to Nigeria and Sudan. It normally inhabits rivers and wooded mountain streams. It lives off larvae and pupae (from under stones). The nest is usually in driftwood or matted grass above flood level near water.
