A medium sized duck (about 45cm) common throughout Southern Africa and north to Ethiopia and Sudan. It inhabits most inland waters - dams, pans, sewage ponds. It lives off water plants (feeds by upending), also aquatic invertebrates. The nest is a grass lined hollow in dense vegetation.
