| A medium sized duck (about 53cm), very common in the south western Cape and the highveld, uncommon throughout the rest of Southern Africa. Its main habitat are vleis and shallow temporary pans. It lives off plankton, mollusks and insects as well as water plants and seeds. The nest is a grass lined hollow in the ground in dense vegetation. | |
