A smallish duck (about 45cm), which is an uncommon resident, absent from the drier Kalahari and west, found generally in Southern Africa and East Africa as far north as Ethiopia. It likes deep, highly eutropic inland waters and lives off larvae and pupae. It makes a nest of reeds and leaves in trampled bushes or sometimes floating.
