A medium to large bird (55 cm to 58 cm) breeding in the northern hemisphere and Australia. It migrates to south America and Africa south of the Sahara. In southern Africa it is an uncommon migrant absent from the drier west. It is usually a solitary bird living adjacent coastal and inland waters and living off fish
