A medium bird (55 cm to 60 cm) found in tropical Africa from Senegal to Botswana. In southern Africa it is a locally common resident of the Okavango, Chobe and Zambezi river systems. It is a solitary bird, swooping down from its perch in a tree on to its prey (usually snakes).
