A largish harrier (48 cm to 56 cm) breeding in Europe, North Africa and central Asia and migrating to the rest of Africa and India. In southern Africa it is a rare non-breeding migrant. It is found in marshes, swamps and adjacent grasslands. The main food source is frogs but it also eats other small vertebrates.
