A largish bird (48 cm to 53cm) endemic to southern Africa. It breeds in the southern Cape Province and migrates to the more central parts of South Africa and Lesotho. It is an uncommon bird found in the grassveld, karoo scrub and mountain fynbos, and lives off birds, nestlings, small rodents and frogs.
