A medium bird (40 cm to 48 cm) breeding in eastern Europe to central Asia and migrating to southern Asia and Africa. In southern Africa it is an uncommon migrant absent from the dry west and south west. It is found on the open grassveld and lives off small mammals, birds and lizards.
