A medium bird (40 cm to 47 cm) breeding in Europe to central Asia, migrating to southern Asia and Africa. In southern Africa it is a scarce non-breeding migrant found in the central, northern and eastern areas. It prefers open grasslands and vleis and feeds off small mammals, birds and reptiles.
