A small bird (29 to 31 cm) which breeds in the Palearctic (eastern Europe to Mongolia) . It is a non breeding migrant in southern Africa where it is commonly found in the northern parts of the region and less so east to Natal. It is found in open grassveld and semi-arid savannah. The main food source is insects
