A medium bird (about 33 cm) distributed from South Africa to Kenya and Uganda. In southern Africa it is a fairly common resident mainly confined to the East. It is found in small coveys in savannah with good grass cover and is a shy elusive bird. It lives off seeds, grain, fruit and bulbs.
