A large bird, (40 to 42 cm), endemic to southern Africa. It is a common resident found in the south eastern parts of the country and inhabits dense riverine scrub in the drier parts. It is found in coveys up to 20 birds and is very noisy in the morning and evening. It lives off seeds, shoots, leaves etc.
