A fairly large bird (about 38 cm) which is distributed from South Africa to Kenya. In southern Africa it is a locally common resident found in the south eastern parts, Mocambique and eastern Zimbabwe. It inhabits wooded gorges and riverine scrub and is found in pairs and small coveys. It lives off seeds, fruit, snails and insects
