A very large bird (102 cm to 107 cm) endemic to southern Africa. It is a common resident found in the south eastern parts of the country with isolated populations at Etosha.  Its habitat is midland and highland grassveld and it is a highly gregarious bird found in large flocks when not breeding. It performs a display dance when breeding. The main diet is frogs, reptiles, insects and fish.
