A small to medium sized bird (27 cm) found in Africa from South Africa to Ethiopia. In Southern Africa it is a fairly common resident, although absent from the drier west and the Kalahari basin. It inhabits reed-beds, marshes and swamps and is usually found in pairs. It eats crabs, insects, worms and small frogs.
