A smallish to medium bird (27 cm to 30 cm) breeding in Eurasia and migrating to Africa. In southern Africa it is a fairly common non breeding migrant found in the east. It is found in rank grasslands and edges of streams and vleis. It is a solitary bird which skulks in dense grass and lives off insects, arachnids and molluscs.
