| A small bird (16 cm to 18 cm) distributed throughout Eurasia, Africa, Australasia and Madagascar. In southern Africa it is a fairly common resident found in the northern and eastern parts. It inhabits reed beds, marshes and vleis and is a solitary bird. It swims, or walks on floating plants while foraging. It lives off aquatic insects, mollusks and crustaceans. | |
