| A large bird (40 to 46 cm) found in Africa north and south of the Sahara, as well as in Madagascar, southern Europe, tropical Asia and Australasia. In southern Africa it is a fairly common resident throughout the region except for the dry west and the Kalahari. It is a solitary bird inhabiting reedy swamps and marshes. It lives off roots, tubers, seeds as well as nestlings, young ducklings and bird's eggs. | |
