This a medium sized bird ( 30 to 36 cm) found worldwide . In southern Africa it is a common resident except for parts of the west and the Kalahari. It is a solitary bird found in reed beds, marshes and edges of rivers and lakes. It lives off water plants, seeds, berries, worms, insects and tadpoles.
