| A medium sized bird (about 43 cm) found in Africa north and south of the Sahara, Madagascar and southern Iberia. In southern Africa it is found wherever water is available. It is an abundant resident found in pairs when breeding and large flocks when not breeding. It spends most of its time in open water and lives off water plants and grass. | |
