A smallish bird (25 to 30 cm) found in Africa south of the Sahara. In Southern Africa it is an abundant resident mainly inhabiting the eastern parts of the region. It is found in lagoons, lakes and pans, usually solitary or in small groups. It feeds off insects, molluscs and crustaceans.
