A medium sized bird (about 43 cm) which breeds in Europe and Asia and migrates to Africa and southern Asia. In southern Africa it is a rare migrant found along the coast. It is a solitary bird inhabiting marine lagoons and feeding off molluscs, annelids and crustaceans.
