| A medium to large bird (43-46 cm), breeding in Africa, Europe and central Asia. In southern Africa it is a locally common bird, resident in parts and nomadic in other parts. It inhabits shallow waters in estuaries, lagoons, marine shores and dams, and lives off insects, crustaceans, worms and molluscs. | |
