A large plover like bird (38 to 40 cm), found in the wetter parts of Africa south of the Sahara, and in the extreme south, east and northern parts of southern Africa. It is a locally common resident inhabiting rivers, dams and lakes. Normally solitary it lives off insects, crustaceans and mollusks
