A medium bird (28 to 30 cm) which breeds in the extreme north of Russia and America. It migrates to southern Asia, southern Europe, Africa and Australasia. In southern Africa it is a common migrant inhabiting tidal flats on the coast and estuaries. The main food source is crustaceans, mollusks and worms.
