A small bird (18 to 19 cm), which breeds in Greenland, Europe and Asia, and migrates to Africa and southern Asia. In southern Africa it is a common non breeding migrant found throughout except for the Kalahari. It is generally a solitary bird found on muddy and rocky shores feeding off molluscs, crustaceans and insects
