A small bird (about 18 cm) distributed from South Africa to East Africa and Madagascar. In southern Africa it is a common resident found through out the region. It normally inhabits gravelly shorelines of inland lakes and dams. It is usually found in pairs and lives off insects, mollusks, crustaceans and worms.
