| A largish bird (male 41 cm, female 50 cm) breeding in central Europe and Asia, and migrating to the Mediterranean, Africa, south Asia and Australia. In southern Africa it is a rare vagrant inhabiting dams, pans and marshes. It lives off mollusks, crustaceans, worms and seeds. | |
