A large bird (male 36 cm, female 41 cm), breeding in the extreme northern Europe and Asia. It migrates to the Mediterranean, Africa, southern Asia and Australasia. In southern Africa it is a locally common migrant found mostly along the west coast. It inhabits tidal flats and estuaries and lives off mollusks, worms, insects and crustaceans
