A medium bird (25-28 cm), found in Europe and Asia. In southern Africa it is a rare non-breeding migrant found in various scattered localities. It inhabits mudflats, estuaries and lagoons, and is normally solitary but in company of other waders. It lives off mollusks, worms and crustaceans
