A smallish bird (23-25 cm), breeding in Europe and Asia, and migrating to Africa, southern Asia and Australia. In southern Africa it is a fairly common non breeding migrant, found throughout the country. It inhabits shallow inland waters, sewerage ponds and tidal mudflats and lives off mollusks, crustaceans and worms
