A medium bird (32-36 cm), breeding in northern Europe and migrating to s Europe, Africa, s Asia and Australasia. In southern Africa it is a common migrant found throughout the region in dams, pans, swamps etc. It is usually solitary and eats insects, mollusks and fish fry
