A smallish bird (20-21 cm), breeding in northern Europe and Asia and migrating to southern Asia, Australia and Africa south of the Sahara. In southern Africa it is a common migrant, found throughout the region. It inhabits pools, streams, flooded marshlands and estuaries and lives off mollusks, crustaceans, insects and worms
