A smallish bird (23 cm) breeding in the Palearctic tundra and migrating to Africa, southern Asia and Australia. In southern Africa it is an uncommon migrant found along the coast, where it inhabits tidal mudflats, estuaries and lagoons. It feeds on crustaceans, insects and mollusks
