A small bird (19 cm) breeding in Europe and Asia and migrating to southern Asia, Africa and Australasia. In southern Africa it is a fairly common migrant throughout, inhabiting almost any shoreline. It is usually a solitary bird, eating insects, mollusks, crustaceans and leeches
