A smallish bird ( 23 cm) which breeds in the Holarctic at higher altitudes. It migrates to the southern parts of the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. In southern Africa it is a common migrant along the sea coast. It is found in small flocks and lives off crustaceans, mollusks, worms and insects.
